I've been doing some research on the events that led to the formation of Sheppey United in 1890 as Sheppey's formative years are normally recorded as that the club were "formed by the merger of the Victoria and Invicta clubs and spent the next few years establishing itself to such good purpose that the club were founder members of the Southern League in 1894" and that is about it. There was a history of the club started in the program when the team was last in the Southern League that went into a bit more depth. It took each season from the club's first season in the Southern League at the end of the 19th century and was quite informative. Unfortunately, it only dealt with about 4-5 seasons before the series stopped.
I was sure that there must be more information available and determined to do something about it. I wanted something more substantial and was sure that some serious research in the local library, at the very least, would turn up more information. If anyone reading this site, however, has any information - and especially pictures to help bring to life this club's history - then please feel free to contact me as I will greatly appreciate any help in compiling a decent history of this club. While I haven't fully investigated the years from 1886 leading up to the club's formation I have found some details on the club's playing on the Isle of Sheppey circa the mid-1880's. It is here that I will start my look at the club's beginnings. From there I will delve into the origins of the club and it's first steps on the competitive football ladder. After this, I have decided to split the club's history into sections covering a specific era - such as the club's first spell in the Southern League for one example - as you will see from looking at the menu's at the top on the left hand side of this page. This menu will be available on all pages in the club history section which will allow you to jump from era to era as you wish.
I have also added an option at the bottom of this menu that will take you to a section that will list the league table from each season of Sheppey's history. These tables will be added as and when I acquire them. The number of league tables is now increasing and I now have just over half of the years that Sheppey competed in league football typed up. This section is divided by decade. On each of these sub-sections, there will be links to bring you back to the main "Club history" menu and the "Season by season" menu to aid your navigation of the club's history as much as I am able to. Anyway - enough of my waffling about what I am going to do with this site. I'll let you now, hopefully, enjoy my account of the history of Sheppey United Football Club.
