Sheppey
United - Season by Season Record
This section
is where I'll list, hopefully, every season's end of season
record for Sheppey. It will be done season by season with a
final league table for each year that the club competed in
league football of some kind (I've not listed any league tables
for the 1st and 2nd World Wars for obvious reasons and Sheppey
had 3 years recently where they either quit the Kent League
before the season was over or did not enter a side in senior
league football).
One thing
to note is that I have decided to list ONLY the most senior
competition when Sheppey competed in more than 1 league at
the same time in any season. In Sheppey's formative years in
competitive football, the club appear to have competed in 2
leagues at the same time with not only the Southern league
being competed in but also, firstly, the Thames and Medway
Combination and, after this, the Kent League . I am not sure
as to whether Sheppey entered their first team or their reserves
in the latter 2 leagues as the number of games give scope for
the first team to have taken part in all 3 so only the Southern
League has been listed in these years.
There is
a section for each decade and when you click on any of the
links you will be taken to a page that has a further menu for
each year within that decade if a league table has been typed
up for it and has been put online. The seasons covered so far
are 1895-1966 and 1972-present. More will
follow as and when I type them up!
What I am
finding frustrating is that the local papers in Sheerness have
patchy coverage of final league tables. Out of all of Sheppey's
Kent League Championship winning seasons, only 1 final table
has been printed in the local papers, even when the island
had 2 papers, and that was the first one in 1906! Even as recently
as the last title win in 1995, the local papers didn't print
the final table. I am now giving serious consideration to going
to libraries outside of the Swale area and seeing if their
archives of local papers covers the Kent League final tables
better than the Sheerness Times, Sheerness Guardian and Sheerness
Times-Guardian have. I certainly hope so.
Well, with many thanks to Chris Collings who is
involved with the History
of Dover Football Club website, I now have all the
league tables from 1895-1966 typed up as well as 1972-present
done. That now leaves me only 5 seasons to hunt down
the league tables for and I will have every league table from
Sheppey's history online - and I'm hopeful of getting those
soon.
I now have the Metropolitan League tables for 1967-1971 with
many thanks to Graham Allison who e-mailed them to me. These
have now been typed up and are online. That now means that every
league table from Sheppey's history is now available online at
this site.
