They
made Sheppey proud
This page
is going to have a look at the best players to have played
for the Sheppey in the club's 100 year plus history. The club
has produced a number of players who have either gone on to
play league football or have made their mark on the game. I
could have started with Art Rule for this section. He was one
of Sheppey's best player's from the club's very earliest years
and the star of Sheppey's 3-0 away win at the strongest side
south of Birmingham at the time - a side by the name of Arsenal
(who were at full strength for the game)!
I have found
some surprising things in my search for Sheppey players that
have gone on to play for Football League clubs. Quite a number
of the players listed as having moved up never actually played
any league games. With, once again, thanks to Chris Collings,
who sent me the link to the Since
1888 website
that lists all players who have played in the Football League
since it's inception in 1888, I could find no record of F Champion,
W Millen, H Johnson and J Hutchins ever having played a league
game.
There really
is only one place to start, though. No player to have played
for the club has gone on the achieve what Eddie Harper did
in the game as a player. Click on his link to the left to go
to his page. Look out, too, for Herbert Chapman who played
for Sheppey United and also played for Tottenham amongst the
many clubs he played for before his well documented achievements
in football management.
